Twenty years ago, sportswriters typically worked for newspapers, or perhaps magazines, but the field has changed vastly. Today, sportswriters still work for traditional outlets but they also may be employed by sports news websites, team websites, or even work on their ow n blog. Many sportswriters also add expertise to radio, television, and streaming video coverage. Thirteen things I believe Principles of organizational behaviorThirteen things I believe Principles of organizational behaviorI have taught an introduction to organizational behavior class for over 30 years to both undergraduate and graduate students.I first taught it as a doctoral student at The University of Michigan and taught an ever-evolving version of the class almost every year since I landed at Stanford in 1983.For many years, the final day, especially the final 20 minutes or so, felt awkward and forced as I struggled to look back on what the class had learned, provide closure, and end on an upbeat note.About 15 years ago, I experimented with an ending ritual I passed out a list of 12 things I believe, made a brief comment about each one, and thanked the class for their efforts and for putting up with my quirks and imperfections. The list contained many beliefs that were related to the class. But they also drew on other work I hadnt mentioned in class and my general perspecti ve on life.It worked and it still does. The students like it and it feels authentic. Ive fiddled with different versions of this list over the years- items come and go, it gets longer and shorter, but it still feels like a useful ritual for wrapping up the class.About ten years ago, I put it on my oldWork Matters blogand people seemed to like it there too I have continued to tweak the list and update the links that explain my opinions in mora detail.This post offers the latest Things I Believe list.I was inspired to update and post it because I am working on a new All Things Bob Sutton site, which goes live in a couple weeks. I dont believe that people who die with the most money, fancy stuff, power, or prestige win the game of life.9. If you are plagued by an assholeor a pack of themmake a clean getaway if you can. If you cant,develop a strategyfor protecting yourself and fellow victims from the onslaught, for preserving your dignity and spirit, and for fighting back.10.Indifference is as important as passion11.Am I a success or a failure?is not a very useful question.It is better to ask what am I learning.12.Life is always going to be a bit messy, especially if you are doing something interesting and new.Try to create as much simpli city and clarity as you can, butembrace (and enjoy) the inevitable confusion and messiness too.13.Jimmy Maloney was right. Work is an overrated activity.I left this last point unexplained on my published lists and without any links until now. Most readers got the message and only a few complained because I didnt explore any nuances or talk about who the heck Jimmy Maloney was to me. Here, for the first time, is the backgroundwhich I always tell my class, but have never written about before.About 20 years ago, I spent many of my weekends and vacations racing sailboats with my boyhood friend Jimmy Maloney. He had a serious and stressful job, but was making good money. He and his wife Loretta still found a lot of time to spend with each other and their three young kids. But Jimmy and Loretta felt oppressed by the rat race. And at the strangest moments10 seconds before the abflug of a race, during complicated maneuvers such as tacks or jibes, or even the middle of a capsize Jimmy would start bellowing work is overrated or we are all suckers, most people wouldnt work if they had a choice. It wasnt just hollow talk. Jim and Loretta quit their jobs, sold their house, bought a sailboat, and cruised with their kids for a couple years (Loretta is a schoolteacher, and she was very disciplined about teaching each kid the material required by their California school district). The family eventually landed in New Zealand, where they raised their kids. They work just enough to support a modest but healthy life. All three kids grew up to be great sailors too. In fact, their daughter Alex won a silver medal in the 2016 Olympics and his son Andy sailed on the New Zealand boat that just won the Americas Cup in 2017.I like to end my class with that story because I am so focused on the workplace in my writings and research, and the students I teach at Stanford are such extreme overachievers, that it is useful to remind them (and myself), as Jimmy would put it, that work is an over rated activity.P.S. We designed another set of bi-stable structures so the system can change from a twisted structure to helical and do dramatic shape change and pull on things for large force, he says. We already developed the prototype and theres a lot of possibility in what we can do with this system as a pneumatic version of an artificial muscle. The idea is we can trigger it to go from different stable states and can, for example, push on something. We are even thinking about prosthetics as a possibility for this.As the work continues, Chen hasnt stopped being blown away by his original plant model. For exampl e, how it lets go of smaller prey and only keeps the right-sized ones. And the more it struggles, the tighter the Venus flytrap closes and secretes juice then it can reopen in a few days and set up for the next possible prey. Its great for engineers to get inspiration from natures design and I think this is easily one of its more fascinating ones. And it also leaves that interesting question How did the Venus flytrap evolve to this? But what happens when a once-happy workplace culture becomes negative?C-Space is a Boston-based company with several international offices that works directly with consumers to co-create new products for brands like Heinz, Bank of America, and Samsung. When things went wrong with their company culture, reports Quartz at Work, they decided to audit it, coming out on the other side with a series of slogans to live and w ork by. And when that went wrong? They went back to the drawing board and did it again, proving that culture is continuously in flux.Starting out as a smaller startup called Promise, they were acquired by an advertising firm Omnicom in 2012, and then merged with another company, becoming C-Space. Thats when things started to feel wrong. By the end of 2015, 30% of the staff had left, and just 56% said they felt proud to work there.Design for livingThe first four set of slogans that the culture committee employees from different areas and levels of the company came up with includedOnly accept awesome.Ive got this.On the surface, the meaning was clear. Only accept awesome meant to do your best work, and accept only the best from your coworkers. Ive got this meant taking ownership of a task or project.Yet, after about a year, employees began to embrace the mantras a little too much to the point that they became corrupted. Only accept awesome had created a new culture of overwork. Ive got this led to tasks going to the wrong people as over-eager employees wanted to be seen performing well.Do-overThe culture had changed, but not for the better. So C-Spaces culture committee brainstormed two more slogansOpen up and listen.Tell it like it is.While two sentences cant change a group of people, they did reportedly help. If anything, the C-Space experiment shows how delicate company culture is, and how difficult it is to engineer a group of people working together. Perhaps the best solution is not changing course completely, but the Japanese workplace concept of kaizen, which means, simply, continuous improvement.
